Future Maines

Marine Corps "poolees" take part in combat conditioning exercises, Saturday May 14, 2011 in a field next to Westland Mall in West Burlington. The exercises which promote physical fitness as well as leadership and teamwork are designed to prepare the "poolees" for recruit training or boot camp. Attendees from both the Burlington and Ottumwa Marine Corps Recruiting offices were taking part.











National Guard Training

A training exercise for soldiers from Iowa National Guards 224th Engineer Battalion, Friday May 13, 2011 at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison, Iowa. More than 50 men and women with the Iowa National Guard 224th Engineer Battalion took part in the two-day training exercise that concluded Friday afternoon.

389th Engineer Co Farewell

Photographs of a farewell ceremony for members of the U.S. Army Reserves 389th Engineer Company, who are being deployed to Iraq, Saturday April 23, 2011 at West Burlington High School as well as pictures of the soldiers departing the following morning for Fort McCoy in Wisconsin, where they will spend about a month making final preparations and training before heading to Iraq.




















Mississippi River Crest in Burlington

The Mississippi River crested in Burlington at 20.4 feet, Easter Sunday, a little over five feet of flood stage and should gradually start falling back to normal.
